Mullvad Browser: what it is and how to use it

Mullvad Browser is a free, open-source browser made by Mullvad with the Tor Project that uses Tor Browser's fingerprinting protections without the Tor network. It suits checking prices, balances and wallet sites with the VPN on.

How do you use Mullvad Browser?

  1. Type mullvad.net/en/browser straight into the address bar and download the version for Windows, macOS or Linux (there is no phone version).
  2. If you can, verify the download with the GPG signature, following the official guide at mullvad.net/en/help/verifying-signatures.
  3. Turn on the VPN from Step 2 before opening the browser: without a VPN, your IP is still visible.
  4. Use the browser as it ships, without much customization and without installing extensions; the goal is to look the same as other users.
  5. Dedicate it to one purpose (purchase research, balance checks, wallet and exchange sites without identifying yourself) and do not sign in to personal accounts in it.

What are the limits and cautions?

  • Without a VPN, your IP is still visible: it masks the browser fingerprint, not the network address, and it does not use the Tor network.
  • It is designed to look like other users, so heavy customization or extensions make it easier to recognize.
  • Mixing personal accounts with the privacy browser undoes the benefit; use one browser per purpose.
