BitBox02: what it is and how to use it
BitBox02 is a hardware wallet from Shift Crypto (Switzerland) focused on Bitcoin, with a multi-coin edition also available. It keeps keys off your computer; in Aug 2026 the maker fixed flaws it called severe.

How do you use BitBox02?
- Buy from Shift Crypto's official site, typed by hand; avoid marketplaces, resellers and used devices.
- Update the firmware to version 9.26.5 or newer before use.
- Choose "create new wallet" and let the device generate the words itself; never use a ready-made seed someone gave you.
- Write the words by hand, numbered and in order, on paper; for the long term, engrave them in metal.
- Confirm the backup on the device, and never photograph the seed, type it into a website or store it in the cloud.
- Test recovery with a small amount before moving anything significant.
- If you use Silent Payments, start with small amounts.
What are the limits and cautions?
- In Aug 2026 the maker disclosed two "severe" flaws: memory corruption on Multi editions not yet set up, and a Silent Payments issue that could lock coins at a wrong address. Fixed in firmware 9.26.5.
- According to the book, they required a malicious host computer and the company reported no known exploitation.
