Trezor: what it is and how to use it

Trezor is an open-source hardware wallet made by SatoshiLabs (Czech Republic). It keeps your keys off your computer and phone, and the open code allows independent auditing.

How do you use Trezor?

  1. Buy from the maker's official site, typed by hand into the address bar (never via an ad or a marketplace).
  2. Check the domain before paying and reject any unit sold "as new" by third parties or with a seed already printed.
  3. Choose "create new wallet" and let the device generate the words itself; never use a ready-made seed someone gave you.
  4. Write the words by hand, numbered and in order, on paper; for the long term, engrave them in metal.
  5. Confirm the backup on the device, and never photograph the seed, type it into a website or store it in the cloud.
  6. Test recovery with a small amount before moving anything significant.
  7. Set a strong PIN and leave the passphrase until you master the flow, keeping its backup apart from the seed.

What are the limits and cautions?

  • Trezor publicly stated it is not affected by the 2026 Coldcard seed flaw; that is the maker's own statement, and the book stresses that no hardware wallet is perfect.
  • This site uses a Trezor affiliate link and may earn a commission at no extra cost to you; it does not change the assessment above.
